What you should be doing NOW; in April and May; for the health, beauty and defense of your trees!
Oak Wilt is a deadly fungus for Oaks. Oak Wilt is one of the most destructive tree diseases in the United States per Texas A&M Forest Service. The Texas Hill Country has lost some 90%+ of its Live Oaks in the past 15-20 years. On a recent trip to Austin, TX to study Oak Wilt, where Live Oaks were once prolific, I could hardly find a Live Oak; let alone a healthy one.I began studying Oak Wilt in earnest about 10 years ago. At that time, I was searching for research which would indicate the percentage of Oaks in North Texas which were afflicted with Oak Wilt. I could not find a study to provide that information so I conducted a study in my own tree care practice. Over the course of a full year I concluded from the data I had compiled in 2012 that Oak Wilt was afflicting approximately 1 Oak in 10,000. I updated that study in 2021 and the data now showed that approximately 1 in 10 Oaks are now afflicted here in North Texas.
It would appear that if your Oaks do not yet have Oak Wilt; they might soon. What to do?
🌳Do not allow your Oaks to be trimmed between Valentines Day and Mothers Day; the most active season for the Oak Wilt pathogen to spread and thrive🌳Make sure your tree surgeons are practicing surgery on your Oaks with sterile tools. Their cutting tools should be cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol or Bleach-Water prior to beginning surgery on your Oaks
Wounds 4” in diameter or larger should be sealed with Pruning Sealant
🌳Feed your Oaks two to four times annually to invigorate their natural defenses to pathogens and disease
🌳Inoculate your Oaks with a specialized fungicide specifically formulated to prevent or control Oak Wilt. This is done by Trunk Injections of the fungicide and requires specialized, costly equipment, materials, training and disciplined technique. You will doubtless want to have this done by an experienced professional who is well-known and highly regarded for this type of work.
It is often and well said, “The best way to treat Oak Wilt is to prevent it”.
