Our Dallas Tree Doctor and Arbor Specialist answers two questions: When do you fertilize lemon trees in Texas?
AND
About how much does monthly pest control cost per tree?

Fruit trees typically require higher Zinc than most; soils in these parts are largely stripped of Zinc from past wide-scale Cotton farming, then Pecan farming; and so Zinc should be supplemented in the Spring (and better still early Summer as well).  In the Fall/Winter; they will require a fertilizer blend prominently featuring Potassium for root-system growth, strength, repairs, and over-all immune/defense operations.

Fruit tree owners/growers should therefore fertilize 2-4 times/yr i.e. Spring (Feb/Mar), Summer (May/June), Fall (Sept/Oct) and Winter (Dec/Jan) and should use a high-quality fertilizer featuring a wide spectrum of both Macro (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium i.e. N-P-K) and as many Micro Nutrients as they can find (Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium, etc., etc.).  Also; they should find the “Spring/Summer” nutrient mix for Spring/Summer.

Lemon/Citrus trees also need an acidic i.e.  6.0 soil pH for efficient nutrient uptake which is lower than what we generally find in N Texas i.e. 7.0+ pH.  Fertilizing trees generally acidifies soils but its only a temporary effect, in which case 4x/yr feeding is a good policy.  There are a number of ways to acidify soils (further).  One simple/easy way is to spread spent coffee grounds around the dripline(s).  Tree care-takers can also find Humic/Humeric Acid soil amendments/supplements for application as/along w/ fertilizers.  Or, they can just call Tree Wizards! Monthly cost for insect control?  Depends; varies widely, depending on type of insects afflicting a tree; and the size of the tree.  Better question is “annual cost” as most applications (that we do) are systemic; and usually done 1x/yr.  A broad spectrum medicament, covering about 85% of all insects that may be active, on say a 4” diameter tree at breast height, would be $10/tree (annually) however we have a $195 minimum service fee (w/in our service area i.e. N/E Dallas; more if outside our service area) in which case we would do more comprehensive care i.e. 2-4x/yr feeding; and Plant Health Care on other valuable and/or ornamental trees on the property so as to give our Clients the greatest “bang for their buck”.  Feeding strengthens trees generally, and specifically their defense/immune systems; so feeding along with Insect treatments is advisable.
