September has arrived, and while North Texas may still feel like summer, fall is right around the corner. This is a great time to start thinking about the health, safety, and long-term care of your trees.

🌳 September Tree Tip #1: Keep Watering
Don’t let the arrival of September fool you. North Texas can remain extremely hot and dry well into the fall.
Trees still need adequate moisture, especially newly planted trees and trees showing signs of drought stress. Deep, thorough watering is generally more beneficial than frequent, shallow watering. The City of Dallas also recommends deep and infrequent watering for North Texas trees.
Watch for:
- Brown or curling leaves
- Early leaf drop
- Dry, cracked soil
- Thinning foliage
- Dead or dying branches
🌳 September Tree Tip #2: Look for Dead or Hazardous Limbs
Take a few minutes to look up into your trees. Dead branches, cracked limbs, hanging branches, and weak connections can become safety concerns, particularly when North Texas storms bring strong winds.
If you see a branch that could fall onto your home, driveway, vehicle, fence, or another area where people gather, consider having it professionally evaluated.
🌳 September Tree Tip #3: Think Ahead About Fall Pruning
Fall is a good time to begin evaluating which trees may need pruning as temperatures eventually cool.
Proper pruning can improve tree structure and remove hazardous or dead wood. The City of Dallas notes that winter is generally the preferred pruning season because cooler temperatures, increased rainfall, and lower insect activity can reduce stress on trees.
And remember: Don’t climb a tree and attempt dangerous pruning yourself. Large limbs and chainsaws can create serious safety hazards.
🌳 September Tree Tip #4: Check Your Trees Before Winter
Before cooler weather arrives, look for:
- Weak or split branches
- Co-dominant stems
- Cracks in major limbs
- Deadwood
- Limbs hanging over roofs or driveways
- Trees leaning unexpectedly
Identifying potential problems early can give you time to address them before winter weather creates additional stress.

Your trees are a long-term investment in your property. A professional inspection can help identify structural problems, disease, storm damage, deadwood, or other issues that may not be obvious from the ground.
