We would like to remind our network and community about a few tree tips for May!
🌳 Watering Wisely
- Deep water trees once a week (especially young or newly planted trees).
- Early morning is best to reduce evaporation.
- Established trees may not need much watering unless there’s a drought, but monitor soil moisture.
🪴 Planting
- May is the tail end of planting season—you can still plant trees, but earlier is better.
- Choose heat-tolerant, drought-resistant native trees like:
- Texas Red Oak
- Cedar Elm
- Bur Oak
- Chinquapin Oak
- Mexican Plum
🧪 Fertilizing (If Needed)
- If your tree didn’t leaf out strongly, consider a slow-release, balanced fertilizer.
- Skip fertilizing healthy native trees; over-fertilization can encourage pests or weak growth.
🌿 Mulching
- Refresh mulch around trees (2–4 inches thick), but keep it away from the trunk base.
- Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
🪱 Watch for Pests and Diseases
- Bagworms begin hatching in May—check cedar, junipers, and other evergreens.
- Watch for signs of aphids, scale insects, or borers—honeydew, leaf curling, or holes.
- Use horticultural oils or insecticidal soap if needed.
✂️ Pruning
- Light pruning only (remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches).
- Avoid major pruning now—it’s better done in winter or late summer to reduce stress.
- Be cautious with oak trees: Do NOT prune them from February through June to avoid oak wilt.
